Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia is a Ugandan business magnate who has developed one of the country's most profitable corporate empires. Dr. Sudhir's affection for Uganda is not just opportunistic, as it is for many investors who go to Uganda for the associated perks.
Sudhir was born in Uganda to an Indian emigrant and raised in Uganda until his family fled to the United Kingdom after Idi Amin's deportation of Indians in 1972. He began living, learning, and working in the United Kingdom, but his heart was in Uganda.
While studying in the UK, the business entrepreneur recalls doing various part-time jobs in bakeries and butcheries. While in the United Kingdom, the self-made millionaire toiled for every dime he could acquire in order to purchase his first property.
"When President Idi Amin expelled Asians in 1972, I fled to the United Kingdom." I worked in factories, supermarkets, butcheries, and a variety of other odd jobs while studying in the evenings until I earned my A-levels. I earned a lot of money and purchased my first property in the UK in 1975. "I worked and lived there until 1985, when I returned to Uganda," Sudhir said in an interview.
After the National Resistance Army (Movement) overthrew Uganda's then-ineffective government in 1985, the country became politically stable, and Sudhir returned to his dream house and began afresh. He began as a shopkeeper importing alcohol and wines from Kenya and selling them in Uganda, which became his first profitable company until he founded Crane Forex Bureau, which he eventually renamed Crane Bank in 1995. Sudhir built the multibillion-dollar enterprise we know today after many years of patience and honesty.
The Ruparelia Group of Companies, often known as the Ruparelia Group, is a conglomerate with significant stakes in real estate, insurance, banking, education, broadcasting, hotels and resorts, floriculture, and a variety of other industries.
The Ruparelia Group's most notable investments have been in the real estate, tourism, and hospitality sectors, which have been business centres and tourist hangouts with world-class services.
Speke Apartments, Speke Resort and Conference Center, Munyonyo Common Wealth Resort, Kabira Country Club, Dolphin Suites, Tourist Hotel and Forest Cottages, and Speke at Bujagali Falls are among the hotels and resorts.
The Uganda Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Right Honorable Thomas Tayebwa, complimented Sudhir for investing in Uganda, particularly in the tourism and hospitality industries, while presiding at the World Tourism Day celebration in Kampala.
"I know folks who have been pleading with Dr. Sudhir to come to their nations and help them grow." I know a lot of people, and some of them were asking me, "What did you give Sudhir as Uganda?" "The guy has a lot of money, and we want him to come and invest in our communities," he said.
"So, chairman," Tayebwa added, "I want to congratulate you and your team of investors who have looked at Uganda as your number one investment destination." He promised investors in Uganda the government's backing.
Premier Recruiting Limited, Goldstar Insurance Company, Premier Roses Limited, Meera Investments Limited, Sanyu FM, and many more investments in real estate, construction, banking, and education are all part of the Ruparelia Group.
"This is my definition of success." My achievement comes when I realise that I launched a project, that I produced jobs for people, and that the people that use my venues profit from it. "That is my success," Sudhir adds.
In a nation where employment are scarce and young people struggle to make ends meet, his business empire employs tens of thousands of Ugandans.
The Ruparelia Foundation is now known for its social duty, as it has begun to give back to the community by visiting orphanages and funding sports events and health camps. Every year at the end of the year, the Ruparelia Foundation gives back to the community and appeals for public participation. The foundation has been able to carry out more than 600 interventions in aiding communities in various elements considered required based on community needs, thanks to its diverse stakeholders.
Every year, hundreds of students get scholarships from Victoria University, one of Sudhir's main investments in Uganda's education sector.
Sudhir has an estimated net worth of $1.2 billion, according to the Forbes list published in January 2021, making him the richest person in Uganda and all of East Africa. His unlimited bravery and ambition to create Uganda have made him a successful business leader whose investment potential drives the Ugandan economy.
