G77 South Summit to be held in Uganda in 2024 at Speke Resort Munyonyo

The reputable Speke Resort Munyonyo is already preparing for the highly anticipated Group of 77 (G77) 3rd South Summit, which will be held at the resort from January 21st to January 23rd, 2024.

The Summit, which was postponed in 2020 because to the COVID-19 epidemic, will now be held the following year under the theme "Leaving no one behind."

Amb. Pedroso Cuesta Pedro Luis, Chair of Group of 77, and his team finished their four-day fact-finding visit on Uganda's preparations to host the summit on Thursday, May 18, 2023, and expressed satisfaction with the arrangements made so far on the ground.

"We are very pleased because we have seen the magnificent efforts being made here to ensure the event's success, and we are confident it will be a success," Amb. Pedroso said, adding that preparations have been completed, including the construction of a state-of-the-art conference center at Speke Resort.

Hon. Henry Okello Oryem, Uganda's State Minister for Foreign Affairs, said in his comments that the summit would help the nation economically and socially. "This momentous occasion underscores Uganda's commitment to promoting collective economic interests and fostering South-South cooperation for development," he added.

The Group of 77's top decision-making body is the South Summit. The First South Summit was hosted in Havana, Cuba, while the Second South Summit was held in Doha, Qatar.

According to the idea of geographical rotation, Uganda was awarded the opportunity to host this summit. The Group of 77 is the United Nations' biggest intergovernmental group of developing nations, and it allows the countries of the South to identify and support their common economic interests.

The summit also intends to strengthen the United Nations system's collective negotiating power on all important international economic problems, as well as to promote South-South cooperation for development.
