Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala celebrated his 65th priesthood anniversary today, December 21, 2022, as well as his 96th birthday, which occurred last week. The Cardinal's lifelong friend, city tycoon Sudhir Ruparelia, hosted a luncheon for him at his mansion in Nsambya, Kampala, with members of his community and close relatives.
Cardinal Wamala, 96, was overjoyed as he cut cake with Dr. Ruparelia and former papal nuncio Archbishop Augustine Kasujja, who also attended the luncheon. Cardinal Wamala praised Dr. Ruparelia for being a great personal friend and for his assistance when he was archbishop of Kampala and thereafter.
"I recall well how you supported me when I was archbishop of Kampala," Cardinal Wamala remarked in a short address.
Dr. Sudhir praised Cardinal Wamala for being a terrific leader and a beautiful human being in his words.
"Your Eminence, you are my inspiration," he added."God has blessed you and blessed us by giving you the opportunity to live a long life and be with us." I've never met a leader who is as modest as you are. "We are grateful to God for everything," he stated.
Dr. Sudhir was recognised by Archbishop Kasujja for his valued relationship with the Cardinal and his support for his ministry. Cardinal Wamala, who turned 96 on December 15, also marked 41 years as a bishop and 28 years as a cardinal this year.
Cardinal Wamala, Archbishop Emeritus of Kampala, was born on December 15, 1926, in the Diocese of Masaka in Kamaggwa. On December 21, 1957, he was ordained as a priest in Rome.
On July 17, 1981, he was named Bishop of Kiyinda-Mityana, and on November 22, 1981, he was ordained by Cardinal Emmanuel Nsubuga. On June 21, 1988, he was appointed coadjutor bishop of Kampala. He replaced Cardinal Nsubuga on February 8, 1990.
St. John Paul II created and declared him Cardinal on November 26, 1994, at the consistory of S. Ugo (St. Hugh). On August 19, 2006, he stepped down as Archbishop of Kampala. Cardinal Wamala took part in the April 2005 conclave that elected Pope Benedict XVI.
