Victoria University, Kampala, is now officially recognised as a private chartered institution of higher learning in Uganda.
Victoria University Vice Chancellor Dr.
Lawrence Muganga shared the exciting news in a Tuesday tweet, in which he
shared a letter from the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) inviting
the institution to the official charter handover ceremony, which will take
place on Friday, August 19th, 2022 at the Council Secretariat.
The Victoria University Charter is now here.
If you want to pursue meaningful education, please come to @VUKampala. "I
appreciate HE President @KagutaMuseveni, Hon. Minister & First Lady
@JanetMuseveni, and @NCHEuganda in particular," Dr. Muganga stated in a
tweet yesterday. "
Prof. Mary J.N. Okwakol, Executive Director of
the NCHE, announced in a letter dated August 16, 2022, that President Museveni
signed the Charter for Victoria University on July 31, 2022.
"As a matter of practise, the National
Council for Higher Education would like to officially hand over the charter to
Victoria University." "The goal of this letter is to invite you and
your team to a formal transfer of the Charter on Friday, August 19th, 2022 at
11:00 am at the NCHE Secretariat," Prof. Okwakol added.
A charter is "given by the President as
proof that the university satisfies the criteria and standards of academic
excellence stipulated by the NCHE," according to the Universities and
other Tertiary Institutions Act.
Furthermore, according to section 103(a) of
the same Act 2001 as modified, a chartered institution is one that is
equivalent to a public university.
Obtaining a charter for any private
university, such as Victoria, implies that it sets forth principles for the
formation, control, management, and administration of the school.
Uganda now has more than 60 universities,
eight of which are government-run public universities, and more than 50 of
which are private, military, or other degree-granting schools.
